Sawan 2023: Story

The Hindu scripture claims that during the Samudra Manthan, or churning of the ocean, many auspicious objects emerged from the water, including countless gems and jewels, the Kaamdhenu Cow, and an elephant named Airawat. However, demons and gods were horrified to see the poison (Halahal), as it had the power to destroy the entire world.

Then, Lord Shiva intervened and took all the poison, storing it in his neck where it turned blue, giving rise to Lord Shiva’s other name of Neelkanth. From this deadly toxin, Lord Shiva delivered the entire universe. To lessen the dangerous effects of the poison, demons and gods began to offer him Ganga holy water. This event took place during this month, from then this month is celebrated as Shravan month, and is considered to be the propitious month in the year.
