A 35-year-old Bhayandar lady who makes cookies and cakes at home to feed her family was defrauded of more than 23 lakh by online con artists who said they could make money by investing in the overseas stock market. The lady reported to the police that she had received a WhatsApp message from an unknown sender offering rich returns on investments in the international stock market in exchange for professional guidance.

The woman clicked the telegraph link attached to the message, and she was then requested to send 5,000 in order to open an account on the platform of a foreign stock market. She was first persuaded to complete 3–4 transactions with the promise of starting trading on an experimental basis. The plaintiff continued to invest her funds in the anticipation of making money.

The complainant lost 23.75 lakh in 18 deposit transactions to bank and digital wallet accounts identified by the cybercriminals over the course of barely 72 hours before she discovered there was a problem. On Monday, the cyber cell and Bhayandar police station reported an offence against anonymous callers in accordance with the pertinent provisions of the IPC and the Information Technology Act-2000. There were more inquiries being conducted.
