On Monday, a building at the Doon Defence College in Dehradun’s Maldevta collapsed due to severe rain in Uttarakhand. The building was washed away by the strong currents of the River Bandal, which was overflowing due to the state’s constant rains during the previous 24 hours.

The Uttarakhand meteorological department has issued a red alert for heavy rains in six districts, including Dehradun and Nainital. The ongoing monsoon rain has badly impacted the hill state, resulting in 60 deaths so far. In addition, at least 17 persons have gone missing.

Landslides caused by severe rain have shut down multiple roadways, including major highways.

The Rishikesh-Chamba National Highway was closed due to a landslide near Kunjapuri Bagardhar in Tehri, and heavy vehicle traffic was halted at Sakhnidhar on the Rishikesh-Devprayag-Srinagar National Highways. A total of 1,169 dwellings and a substantial area of agricultural land have been destroyed.

Due to severe rain and flooding, authorities in Dehradun and Champawat have ordered the closure of all schools today. In light of the floods, the Uttarakhand government has ordered district magistrates and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to be on high alert and ready to assist residents in the event of an emergency.
