Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy, fondly known as YSR, was a prominent Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh from 2004 until his untimely death in 2009. Born on July 8, 1949, in Pulivendula, Andhra Pradesh, YSR hailed from a family deeply engaged in public service. His father, Y. S. Raja Reddy, was a well-known leader in the region.
Early Life and Education
YSR pursued his medical education at Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College in Gulbarga, Karnataka, and later worked as a medical officer at the Jammalamadugu Mission Hospital. In 1973, he established a charitable hospital in Pulivendula, named after his father. His commitment to public service was apparent from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his efforts to enhance healthcare in his community.
Political Career
YSR entered active politics in 1978, contesting multiple elections and winning each one. He served as the President of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee twice and held various ministerial positions, including Minister of State for Rural Development, Excise, and Education. In 1999, he became the Leader of the Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh
In 2004, YSR was elected as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, a role he held until his death in 2009. During his tenure, he launched several welfare schemes aimed at improving the lives of the underprivileged. Some of his notable initiatives included the Rajiv Arogya Shree health insurance program, free public ambulance services, and the Rs. 2/kg rice scheme. He also provided free electricity to farmers and introduced reservations for minorities.
Death
On September 2, 2009, YSR tragically died in a helicopter crash in the Nallamala Hills of Andhra Pradesh. The helicopter, which was carrying YSR and four others, encountered bad weather and crashed, resulting in the deaths of all on board. The crash prompted one of the largest search and rescue operations in India's history, involving thousands of personnel from various agencies.
