Syria's Interim Government Takes Steps Towards Democracy with New Committee Formation
In a significant move towards democratic governance, Syria's interim president, Ahmed Al Shar, has announced the establishment of a seven-member committee tasked with drafting a constitutional declaration. This initiative comes in the wake of the repeal of the Assad-era constitution, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's political landscape.

The committee, which will propose a new legal framework for Syria's transition to democracy, includes a diverse group of legal experts. Among them is Abdul Hamed Al Awak, a constitutional law professor based in Turkey, and Yasid Al Hsh, the newly appointed dean of Damascus University's law faculty. Isma Al Khalan, another member, specializes in international law and serves as the law faculty dean at Aleppo University. Notably, Bahia Mardini, a journalist with a doctorate in law residing in Britain, adds a crucial female perspective to the committee. Additionally, Muhammad Rea JY, an expert in international law from Idlib University, rounds out the group.
Despite the committee's formation, no specific timeline has been provided for when the proposed constitutional declaration will be submitted to the president. This development follows Al Shar's leadership of the Islamist group Hay al-Sham, which played a crucial role in the overthrow of Bashar Al Assad, ending over 50 years of the Assad family's rule in Syria.
As the interim government aims to navigate the complexities of establishing a democratic framework, the international community remains attentive to Syria's evolving political situation. The success of this initiative could pave the way for a new chapter in Syria's history, emphasizing the need for stability and governance that reflects the aspirations of its people.
