Volleyball is a fast-paced and popular sport played globally, known for its teamwork and dynamic action. To maintain the game's integrity and ensure fair play, volleyball follows a set of specific rules and regulations. 

1. The Court and Equipment

Court Dimensions:

• The standard volleyball court measures 18 meters (59 feet) in length and 9 meters (29.5 feet) in width. It is divided into two equal halves by a net.

Net Height:

• For men's volleyball, the net height is set at 2.43 meters (7 feet 11 5/8 inches).

• For women's volleyball, the net height is set at 2.24 meters (7 feet 4 1/8 inches).

Ball:

• The volleyball must be spherical, made of a flexible leather or synthetic leather cover with a bladder inside. The circumference should be 65-67 centimeters (25.6-26.4 inches), and the weight should be 260-280 grams (9.2-9.9 ounces).

2. Teams and Players

Team Composition:

• Each team consists of six players on the court at any given time. Players rotate positions in a clockwise direction each time their team wins the serve.

Substitutions:

• Teams are allowed a limited number of substitutions per set. Substitutions must be made through the substitution zone located at the sideline nearest the team bench.

3. Scoring and Winning

Match Format:

• A standard volleyball match is played in a best-of-five sets format. The first four sets are played to 25 points, while the fifth set, if necessary, is played to 15 points.

Winning a Set:

• A team must win a set by at least two points. If the score reaches 24-24 (or 14-14 in the fifth set), play continues until a team leads by two points.

Winning the Match:

• The team that wins three sets first wins the match.

4. Serving and Rotation

Serving:

• The serve is initiated from behind the end line within the serving zone. The server must make contact with the ball before stepping on or over the end line.

• The serve must clear the net and land within the opponent's court without touching any obstacles or the net.

Rotation:

• Players must rotate positions in a clockwise direction each time their team wins the serve from the opponents. The rotation ensures that each player serves and plays in both front-row and back-row positions.

5. Gameplay and Actions

Rally:

• A rally begins with the serve and continues until the ball is dead. The objective is to send the ball over the net and into the opponent's court while preventing the opponent from doing the same.

Hits:

• Each team is allowed up to three hits to return the ball over the net. The hits typically consist of a bump (pass), set, and spike (attack).

• A player cannot hit the ball twice consecutively, except during a block.

Blocking:

• Blocking is a defensive action where front-row players attempt to stop or deflect the opponent's attack at the net.

• A block does not count as one of the three team hits. After a block, the team has three more hits to return the ball.

6. Faults and Violations

Net Violations:

• Players are not allowed to touch the net during play. A net touch results in a point for the opposing team.

Line Violations:

• Players must not cross the centerline under the net during play. Crossing the line results in a point for the opposing team.

Carrying or Lifting:

• The ball must be hit cleanly and not caught, thrown, or lifted. Such actions result in a point for the opposing team.

Double Hit:

• A player cannot contact the ball twice consecutively, except during a block. A double hit results in a point for the opposing team.

7. Referees and Officials

Referees:

• A volleyball match is officiated by a first referee and a second referee. The first referee stands on an elevated platform near the net, while the second referee stands on the opposite side at floor level.

Line Judges:

• Line judges assist the referees by monitoring the boundaries and signaling whether the ball is in or out.
