IPL 2025: Exciting New Rules Set to Transform the Cricketing Landscape
The Indian Premier League (IPL), the world's richest cricket league, is gearing up for its 18th season, kicking off with a thrilling match between the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens this Saturday. With several significant rule changes implemented for the 2025 campaign, teams will need to adapt quickly to stay competitive.
Key Changes to IPL Rules
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed these new regulations during a meeting held in Mumbai, which are set to affect all matches, including the playoffs. Among the most notable changes is the lifting of the saliva ban, which had been in place since 2020 to combat the spread of COVID-19. With high-profile players like Mohammed Shami advocating for this change, the league will now allow players to use saliva on the ball once again.
Another significant adjustment is the introduction of the two-ball rule, aimed at tackling the challenges posed by dew in Indian conditions. Traditionally, a single white ball is used throughout each innings, but starting from the 11th over of the second innings, a new ball will be introduced to ensure a fair contest between bat and ball.
Additionally, the BCCI has modified the penalties for team captains. Instead of facing immediate match bans for over eight offenses, captains will now receive demerit points, with bans being reserved for exceptional circumstances.
Expanded Decision Review System
The Decision Review System (DRS) is also set to see enhancements, as it will now include calls for high wides and wides outside the off stump. However, this new system will not apply to leg side wides, which could change the dynamics of how bowlers approach their deliveries.
As teams prepare to adapt to these changes, the IPL 2025 season promises to be filled with exciting matches and new strategies. Fans can expect a fresh take on the beloved tournament, making it an unmissable event in the cricketing calendar.
