Escalating Israeli Raids and Displacement in the West Bank Amid Fragile Gaza Ceasefire

As the fragile ceasefire in Gaza holds, Israel's ongoing military operations in the occupied West Bank continue to escalate. The latest focus is the Jenin refugee camp, where thousands of Palestinians are being forced to leave their homes due to heavy Israeli raids that have entered their third week. Despite there being no Hamas presence in the West Bank, the Israeli military offensive is causing severe destruction and displacement.

The situation in the West Bank, particularly in Jenin, is growing increasingly dire as Israeli forces continue their military operations under the code name Iron Wall. The UN has reported that since the operation began, as many as 5,000 Palestinians have been displaced, with entire families losing their homes due to Israeli airstrikes and ground assaults. In Jenin, over 100 houses have been either destroyed or heavily damaged due to repeated bombings.

Palestinian civilians in Jenin are facing a crisis. Refugee camps are being systematically targeted, displacing families who have already lived through months of hardship. Many residents have had no access to basic infrastructure, including water, for extended periods, exacerbating their suffering. The situation has become catastrophic, with aid efforts hampered by ongoing military activity and blockades, leaving the population with limited support.

Israel’s operations in the West Bank have raised widespread concern about their impact on Palestinian civilians. The raids have killed over 70 people according to the Palestinian Health Ministry, while Israel’s military claims to have eliminated over 50 individuals it categorizes as terrorists. These actions follow a controversial political move by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who lifted sanctions on Israeli settlers, further emboldening right-wing factions in Israel.

The U.S.'s withdrawal of support for agencies like UNRWA and its decision to close USET have significantly reduced humanitarian aid to Palestinian areas, including Jenin. For the displaced families, these decisions mean they are left without crucial support as they face mounting challenges.

Experts suggest that the return of Donald Trump to power, if it happens, could further increase Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank. This development aligns with Israeli right-wing lawmakers’ push for greater control over Palestinian territories. However, for many Palestinians, the situation appears to be worsening, with no immediate prospects of relief.

The ongoing military operations and the displacement of thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank signal a broader escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, adding to the complexities of a fragile peace in Gaza.
