Origins and Apparitions
Annai Velankanni Church is situated in Velankanni, Tamil Nadu, India, and stands as one of the most revered pilgrimage sites for Christians in the country. The church is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, also referred to as Our Lady of Good Health. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary made three appearances in Velankanni during the 16th and 17th centuries.

First Apparition (1570): A young shepherd boy delivering milk encountered a radiant woman holding a child, who requested some milk. After the boy obliged, he discovered that his jug remained full upon reaching his destination. This site is now known as Maatha Kulam, or "Mother's Well".

Second Apparition: A few years later, a lame boy selling buttermilk met the same woman and child, who asked for some buttermilk. After giving her some, the boy was miraculously healed of his lameness.

Third Apparition: In the late 17th century, Portuguese sailors caught in a storm prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. Miraculously, their ship was saved, and they landed safely near Velankanni.
Development of the Shrine
Following these apparitions, a small chapel was constructed by the Portuguese from Goa and Bombay. Over time, this chapel was expanded and developed into what is now known as the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health.
Elevation to Basilica Status
In 1962, Pope John XXIII elevated the shrine to the status of a minor basilica, acknowledging its significance as a pilgrimage site. Today, the basilica attracts millions of pilgrims from around the world each year.
