1.The recent spate of deaths involving Indian students in the United States has raised significant concerns within both the Indian and Indian-American communities. In 2024 alone, at least 11 Indian students either died mysteriously or were killed in various incidents across the country. These tragic events have left families and communities in shock, prompting calls for better safety measures and support for international students.
2.One of the most recent cases involved Mohammed Abdul Arfath, a 25-year-old student from Hyderabad, who was found dead in Ohio. Arfath had enrolled in a Master's program at Cleveland State University in 2023. His death is currently under investigation, with the Indian Embassy promising to coordinate with local authorities to ensure a thorough inquiry.
3.Another case is that of Uma Satya Sai Gadde, a student at Cleveland University, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances. The Indian Consulate in New York confirmed Gadde's untimely death and stated that an investigation is ongoing.
4.In March 2024, Amarnath Ghosh, a Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi dancer from Kolkata, was allegedly shot dead by an unknown assailant in St. Louis, Missouri. The investigation into his death is still underway.
5.Paruchuri Abhijit, a 20-year-old from Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district, was found dead inside an abandoned car in a forest on March 11. While his family alleged that Abhijit was murdered, local authorities denied any foul play, and the Indian Embassy also dismissed claims of foul play.
6.Venkataramana Pittala, a 27-year-old student from Telangana, was killed in a jet ski collision in March 2024. Pittala was pursuing a Master's Degree from Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) when the accident occurred.
7.Sameer Kamath, a US citizen of Indian origin, was found dead in the woods in Indiana on February 5. Kamath's death was ruled a suicide by medical examiners.The deaths of these students have sparked anxiety and concern within the South Asian community. At Purdue University, two Indian students died in separate incidents within a week of each other. Neel Acharya, a 19-year-old student, went missing after a night out and was found dead the next morning. Just over a week later, Sameer Kamath, a 23-year-old graduate student, was found deceased in the nearby woods with a gunshot wound to the head.
8.In January 2024, the bodies of two Indian-origin students, Dinesh Gattu and Sai Rakoti, were discovered in their residence in Hartford, Connecticut. Both students died from accidental overdoses involving fentanyl.
9.Another tragic incident involved Vivek Saini, a 25-year-old Indian graduate student, who was allegedly beaten to death in the store where he worked in Lithonia, Georgia.
10.In a more recent case, Koyyada Ravi Teja, a 26-year-old student from Hyderabad, was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in Washington Avenue, USA. Teja had moved to the US in 2022 to pursue his master's degree and was actively attending job trials when the incident occurred.
