Trump Discusses Ukraine War, Rare Earth Deal, and Putin Talks Amid Kremlin Silence
Donald Trump reveals ongoing talks with Putin about ending the Russia-Ukraine war while eyeing Ukraine's rare earth minerals. What’s next for global diplomacy?

Trump Reveals Talks With Putin, Kremlin Stays Silent
In an exclusive interview with the New York Post, former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he had spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin but refused to disclose the number of times they had communicated. While the Kremlin has neither confirmed nor denied the conversation, speculation grows over potential diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump reiterated his stance on swiftly ending the conflict, a promise he made during his campaign. He claimed that Putin also wanted an end to the bloodshed, directing his National Security Adviser Mike Walls to expedite negotiations.
However, the timing of these discussions remains unclear, as does whether the two leaders have communicated since Trump assumed office in January. Despite uncertainty, Trump remains optimistic, stating:
“I’d like to see that war end for one primary reason—they’re killing so many people. You’re losing millions on the battlefield. The numbers Ukraine provided were lower, but I believe they’re not correct.”
Trump’s Plan for Ukraine and Rare Earth Minerals
Aside from diplomatic efforts, Trump has suggested a strategic shift in U.S. assistance to Ukraine, linking aid to securing access to the country’s vast rare earth mineral reserves. Speaking earlier this week, he emphasized the economic and geopolitical significance of these resources, hinting at a deal with Kyiv.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed willingness to negotiate, presenting a map highlighting mineral-rich territories currently occupied by Russian forces. Zelensky underscored the economic stakes, stating:
“These deposits are priceless. It’s huge amounts of money. If America wants a deal, then let’s do a deal. We are open to it.”
The discussion around Ukraine’s mineral wealth introduces a new dimension to U.S. foreign policy, potentially reshaping America’s approach to the ongoing war.
Upcoming Diplomatic Engagements
While Trump will not attend the upcoming Munich Security Conference, where Ukraine’s delegation will be led by Zelensky, U.S. Vice President D. Van and Special Envoy Keith Kellog are expected to represent Washington. Trump has, however, confirmed that he will likely meet Zelensky next week and intends to speak with Putin soon.
“We’ll be meeting with President Zelensky next week, and I will probably be talking to President Putin. I want to see that war end, just on a human basis.”
Kremlin’s Calculated Silence on Trump-Putin Talks
Despite Trump's assertions, the Kremlin has yet to acknowledge the reported discussions. Professor Giorgio Cafiero, CEO of GF State Analytics and a Georgetown University professor, suggests Moscow may later confirm the talks, strategically shaping its narrative to project strength.
Cafiero noted that while Trump aims to freeze the war quickly, achieving such an outcome remains complex. He explained:
“The best-case scenario is freezing the Ukraine war, not resolving it. The U.S. sanctions have harmed Russia, but its economy has not collapsed. Meanwhile, Moscow may see Washington’s signals about cutting off military aid as an opportunity to gain more ground.”
Future of the Russia-Ukraine War: A Stalemate or Resolution?
Trump's assertion that he could resolve the conflict within 24 hours has been widely criticized as unrealistic. However, his approach signals a shift in U.S. priorities—from military support to economic negotiations.
While a swift peace deal remains unlikely, Trump’s strategy to intertwine U.S. aid with Ukraine’s mineral wealth introduces a new angle to global diplomacy. Whether this tactic accelerates negotiations or complicates them further remains to be seen.
As tensions continue, all eyes are on upcoming talks between Trump, Zelensky, and Putin. Will these discussions lead to peace, a strategic deal, or prolonged geopolitical maneuvering? The next few weeks could determine the course of the war and U.S.-Russia relations.
