Tragic Methanol Poisoning Incident in Amritsar Claims 14 Lives
At least 14 individuals have tragically lost their lives in Amritsar, Punjab, following the consumption of spurious liquor, with six others currently hospitalized. The incident has prompted swift action from local authorities, who have registered two FIRs and arrested four local suppliers, including the main distributor.

The Amritsar police are actively conducting door-to-door investigations to identify others who may have consumed the hazardous liquor. Raids on local establishments are ongoing, and further arrests of those involved in the manufacturing and distribution of the toxic substance are anticipated.
According to police reports, the arrested suppliers disclosed the involvement of a liquor supplier named Prabjet, who led investigators to a key figure, Sahib Singh, identified as the kingpin responsible for supplying methanol. Singh allegedly obtained 50 liters of methanol, which was subsequently diluted to produce 120 liters of dangerous liquor that was sold to the local suppliers.
Authorities have invoked stringent legal provisions against the six arrested individuals in connection with this case, reflecting the serious nature of the offenses under sections of the law specifically targeting such illicit activities.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding the regulation of alcohol production and distribution in India, particularly in regions where spurious liquor has previously led to similar tragedies. As investigations continue, the Punjab government faces pressure to address the underlying issues contributing to the proliferation of unsafe alcoholic beverages.
The community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to liquor production and sales to prevent further tragedies.
