THE VAMPIRE DIARIES is set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls and centers on the interplay between orphaned Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and two vampire brothers, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder).
Based on L.J. Smith’s novel series, this supernatural drama follows the lives of two brothers, Damon and Stefan Salvatore, who have been living as vampires for centuries. After years of wandering from place to place to conceal their never-ending youth (and murderous state), the brothers return to Mystic Falls, Virginia, where their human lives ended. Damon is sardonic, attractive, and charming, with an attraction for evil, whereas Stefan tries to stay honourable, in part to atone for past wrongdoing.
Elena and Stefan each keep notebooks to record their thoughts and feelings, but Stefan’s diary also contains interesting insights about his complicated background and the town’s unusual supernatural heritage. The advent of Elena’s vampire doppelganger, Katherine , “original” vampire Klaus (Joseph Morgan), and vampire hunter Rayna (Leslie-Anne Huff) later in the series complicate the storyline.
