This groundbreaking research suggests that having a cat or dog in your life might provide a happiness boost comparable to receiving an annual income hike of approximately $90,000.

The study analyzed data from over 2,500 households across Britain, highlighting that pet owners reported a significant rise in emotional well-being. On a satisfaction scale of 1 to 7, those with pets experienced an increase of 3 to 4 points. This research employed a unique method known as the life satisfaction approach, commonly used by economists to assign financial value to intangible benefits such as clean air and green parks, extending this concept to pet ownership.

The lead author of the study drew inspiration from previous research estimating the economic value of friendships. She argued that if people can quantify the benefits of social interactions, it is equally valid to assess the value of companionship from pets.

Previous studies have already established a link between pet ownership and improved physical health. Dog owners tend to engage in more physical activities, experience lower stress levels, and children raised with pets often exhibit fewer allergies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, research indicated that dog owners felt a greater sense of love and support compared to those without pets, even when both groups had regular human interactions.

This latest study pushes the narrative further, suggesting that pets may play an even more significant role in enhancing mental health than previously recognized.
