In India, it is not unusual to see a beggar on the street, in a train, or somewhere else. And frequently, we observe them as poor, helpless individuals struggling to survive on a daily basis. What if, though, we told you that at least some of them are wealthier than you realise? Yes, some of them are in fact wealthier than the majority of us who work in the government or own businesses.

Mumbai-born Bharat Jain is one such individual. According to a report by Zed News, he owns the title of being the World’s Richest Beggar.

Bharat Jain may have beengg you on one of Mumbai’s countless streets. He has a wife, two boys, a brother, and his father as members of his family. His two kids have graduated from high school. Jain has a net worth of 7.5 crores rupees, according to Zed News. He begs and makes between Rs 60,000 and Rs 75,000 each month. He has a 1.2 million rupee two-bedroom apartment in Mumbai.

In a separate report by IndiaTimes published in February 2021, Jain owns two apartments valued at Rs 70 lakh each. The Zee News report also says that Jain owns two shops in Thane that have been rented out for Rs 30,000 per month.

Bharat Jain continues to panhandle on the streets of Mumbai despite having a net worth greater than the majority of middle-class homes in India. According to a Zed News article, Jain makes between Rs 2,000 and Rs 2,500 each day after begging for 10 to 12 hours each day. It’s not unexpected if after reading this article people who work for 10–12 hours or more in front of a computer or at any other job but don’t make $1,000–$2,000 per day start to second-guess their career choice.

Bharat Jain and his family live nicely in a 1BHK duplex residence in Parel, as per Zee News. His family owns and operates a stationary store. Even though they have repeatedly advised Jain to not continue living as a beggar, the report says, he just doesn’t listen and continues with the one job that helped made him a millionaire.
