The Future is Here! India's 1st Hydrogen Vessel Sets Sail for Mahakumbh

India's historic journey towards clean transportation on waterways has taken a significant step forward! The country's first indigenous hydrogen fuel cell vessel designed for inland waterways has arrived in Varanasi. Built by Cochin Shipyard under the Harit Nauka initiative, this 24-meter, fully air-conditioned vessel boasts a passenger capacity of 50 and a cruising speed of approximately 20-25 kilometers per hour (6.5 knots).

Six Months of Testing on the Ganges:

Before its official launch, the vessel will undergo a six-month trial period on the Ganges River under the watchful eyes of experts from Cochin Shipyard. This crucial phase aims to ensure smooth operation, optimal performance, and gather valuable data for future use.

Plans for the Mahakumbh and Beyond:

Following successful trials, the vessel is envisioned to operate between Kashi (Varanasi) and Prayagraj during the upcoming Mahakumbh, a massive Hindu pilgrimage event. This eco-friendly mode of transport aligns perfectly with India's growing focus on clean energy solutions.

Currently in Varanasi:

The hydrogen vessel is currently docked at the Multimodal Terminal Jalhupur in Varanasi, where its interior will receive finishing touches. IWAI officials have already inspected the vessel and received a briefing on its capabilities from the captain and crew.

This exciting arrival marks a promising step towards a cleaner and more sustainable future for inland waterway transportation in India. Stay tuned for further updates on the vessel's trials and its potential role in the upcoming Mahakumbh!
