Tensions Rise in West Bengal: Clashes Erupt Over Controversial Amendment Bill
In West Bengal's Murshidabad district, violent clashes have resulted in three fatalities, prompting the deployment of five companies from India's Border Security Force (BSF). This unrest is reportedly linked to ongoing protests against the contentious WAQF Amendment Bill. The Kolkata High Court intervened, ordering the deployment of central forces to restore order amid escalating violence.
On Saturday, the IG of the South Bengal Frontier, Karni Singh Shikhawad, confirmed that the BSF will coordinate with local police to ensure stability. The court, led by Justice Suman Sen, emphasized the importance of addressing such situations proactively, directing both central and state authorities to provide separate reports on the unrest.
In the wake of the clashes, police have arrested over 150 individuals connected to the violence, and authorities imposed prohibitory orders while suspending internet services to curb further escalation. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged citizens of all faiths to maintain peace and harmony, reiterating her party's opposition to the amendment and its non-implementation in the state.
As the situation develops, the focus remains on restoring calm and ensuring the safety of residents in the affected areas.
