Syria's Path to Democracy: Interim President Forms Constitutional Committee

In a significant move towards democratic governance, Syria's interim president Ahmed Al Shar has established a seven-member committee tasked with drafting a constitutional declaration aimed at regulating the country's transition to democracy. This legal framework comes in the wake of the repeal of the Assad-era constitution, marking a pivotal shift in Syria's political landscape.

The committee, which includes a diverse group of legal experts, will present its proposals to the interim president, although no specific timeline for the completion of this task has been set. Among the members is Abdul Hamed Al Awak, a constitutional law expert and university lecturer, and Yaser Al Hes, recently appointed dean of the law faculty at Damascus University. Ishma Al Kalalan, another committee member, specializes in international law and serves as the law faculty dean at Aleppo University.

Notably, the committee features Baha Mardini, the sole woman member, who is a journalist with a doctorate in law and has been residing in Britain. Additionally, Muhammad Reda Juli, who specializes in international law from Idlib University, rounds out the committee's expertise.

This initiative follows a year marked by significant political upheaval. In December of the previous year, Al Shar, leading the Islamist group Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), spearheaded the movement that resulted in the overthrow of Bashar Al Assad, effectively ending over half a century of the Assad family's authoritarian rule in Syria. Following his appointment as interim president in January, Al Shar committed to establishing a constitutional declaration, laying the groundwork for a democratic Syria.

As the committee embarks on this crucial task, the world watches closely to see how Syria navigates its transition and whether it can establish a stable and democratic political system in the wake of years of conflict and authoritarian governance.
