Supreme Court Inquiry Unveils Controversy Surrounding Justice Yashwant Verma
The controversy surrounding alleged cash stashed at the residence of Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Verma has intensified following the release of an inquiry report by the Supreme Court of India. This report, which includes photographs and videos, stems from an internal investigation led by Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, D.N. Upadhyaya.
The investigation has revealed disturbing footage showing sacks of burnt currency notes allegedly discovered at Justice Verma's home. This development comes a day after the Delhi Fire Services submitted a report that notably did not mention any cash being found at the scene. Justice Verma has vehemently denied the allegations, claiming they are part of a conspiracy to frame and defame him.
In a statement regarding the recovery of the burnt cash, Justice Verma asserted that only debris and salvageable items were cleared after a fire incident at his residence, denying any removal of the alleged currency. He further clarified that the room where the fire occurred, and where the cash was purportedly found, was an outhouse and not the main building where he and his family reside.
In light of these serious allegations, Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, has established a three-member committee to probe the matter. This committee includes Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Shireesh Kumar Gupta, Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, Justice G.S. Sandhawalia, and Kerala High Court Judge, Justice Anu Sivaraman.
Additionally, the Chief Justice has directed Justice Verma to preserve all communication records on his phone to aid in the investigation. As this situation unfolds, the implications for judicial integrity and accountability in India are significant, highlighting the need for a thorough and transparent inquiry into the allegations against Justice Verma.
This case is poised to attract widespread attention as the investigation progresses, with many observing how it will impact public trust in the judiciary.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as we continue to monitor the investigation's outcomes and implications.
