Stormy Weather to Dominate UK Winter: What to Expect
The UK is bracing for continued stormy weather as winter progresses, with meteorologists predicting an active jet stream that will drive low-pressure systems across northwest Europe. Following the devastation caused by Storm Éowyn and Storm Herminia, the outlook for February suggests more wet and windy weather is on the way.
A Season Defined by Storms
The 2023/24 storm season has already been one of the most active since the Met Office began naming storms in 2015. With five storms named so far, including the extraordinary Storm Éowyn, which brought 100 mph winds to Scotland, this winter has been marked by significant disruption. Storm Éowyn alone caused widespread damage and tragically claimed two lives.
The combination of a highly active jet stream and frequent low-pressure systems means storm clustering—when multiple storms occur in quick succession—is likely. February is expected to see above-average storm activity, with increased risks of disruptive wind events.
Warmer but Wet: The Long-Range Forecast
In addition to stormy conditions, the UK is experiencing milder-than-average temperatures this winter. Meteorologists attribute this to the jet stream pulling in air from the southwest. While January saw a brief cold snap, with temperatures plunging to -18.9°C in Scotland—the coldest in 15 years—February and March are likely to be significantly milder.
The Met Office and DTN, the BBC’s forecast provider, anticipate limited chances of sustained cold spells. Instead, the focus will be on managing the impacts of wet and windy conditions, particularly in northern areas, while southern regions may see drier and calmer weather by March.
Preparing for the Months Ahead
As the UK faces ongoing weather challenges, preparation remains key. From flood defenses to emergency response plans, local authorities and residents alike will need to remain vigilant. The active storm patterns also serve as a reminder of the importance of long-term climate resilience planning.
For now, the outlook suggests that winter will end as it began: unsettled and stormy. Whether March comes "in like a lion, out like a lamb," as the old saying goes, remains to be seen, but for the immediate future, the UK should brace itself for a turbulent end to the season.
