Russian Forces Capture Velyka Novosilka in Donbas, Tensions Rise for Peace Talks Russian Advances in Eastern Ukraine
Russian forces have made significant progress on the Ukrainian front lines, capturing the town of Velyka Novosilka in the Donbas region. According to Moscow's Ministry of Defense, Russian troops have successfully "liberated" the settlement, which lies to the west of the contested Donbas region. This area has long been a focal point of the ongoing conflict, and the capture of Velyka Novosilka marks a continued Russian advance in an area that had largely been static in recent months.
As Russian forces press forward, concerns are mounting that a new Russian offensive could escalate tensions in the region. This comes amid reports of increasing Russian troop movements and artillery bombardments, signaling that Moscow is preparing for further military actions along Ukraine's southern front.
Ukraine Strikes Russian Oil Refinery
In response to Russia's continued assault, Ukraine claimed responsibility for a drone attack on a Russian oil refinery south of Moscow. The attack marks the second strike on the same refinery in less than two weeks. Ukrainian forces targeted facilities belonging to the Razan Oil Refining Company, which Ukraine claims is utilized by Moscow's Air Force.
The strikes are part of Ukraine's broader strategy to weaken Russia's military infrastructure and disrupt supply lines, particularly as Russia's military efforts intensify in the eastern regions of Ukraine. The drone strikes also represent a significant shift in Ukraine's tactics, demonstrating its growing ability to strike critical infrastructure deep within Russian territory.
Zelenskyy Calls for Involvement of the US and Europe in Peace Talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has once again stressed the importance of Ukraine’s inclusion in any potential peace talks with Russia. Speaking at a joint press conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Zelenskyy emphasized that while US President Joe Biden could play a pivotal role in ending the war, Ukraine must be directly involved in any negotiations.
Zelenskyy asserted:
"The US president can end the war, but only when he involves Ukraine in the talks. This can only be done with Ukraine’s participation, otherwise, it will not work, because Russia does not want to end the war."
The Ukrainian leader’s comments reflect growing concerns that Russia may be seeking a settlement that excludes Ukraine from critical discussions about its future. Zelenskyy has called on Western allies to work towards determining a format for peace talks, with Europe and the United States playing key roles in shaping the outcome.
The Road Ahead: Can Peace Talks Bring an End to the Conflict?
As Russia and Ukraine continue their brutal military engagements, the prospects for peace remain uncertain. With Zelenskyy’s push for direct involvement in any negotiations, it’s clear that Ukraine is unwilling to settle for an agreement that compromises its sovereignty.
While President Zelenskyy remains hopeful that peace can be achieved, he insists that any dialogue must be inclusive of Ukraine and must guarantee the country’s security and territorial integrity. The involvement of global powers like the US and Europe will likely be pivotal in determining whether a lasting peace is possible or if the war will continue to escalate.
