Mumbai Reports First Case of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) Amid Maharashtra Outbreak

Mumbai Records First Case of GBS as Maharashtra Sees Surge

Mumbai has reported its first case of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare but serious neurological disorder, as Maharashtra witnesses a sharp increase in suspected cases. According to local municipal officials, a 64-year-old woman was diagnosed with GBS and is currently receiving intensive care in a civic-run hospital.

The case comes as Maharashtra records 180 suspected cases of GBS so far, with six deaths reported in Pune District.

What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)?

GBS is an autoimmune neurological disorder that occurs when the body’s immune system, in response to a previous infection, mistakenly attacks the nervous system. This leads to muscle weakness, paralysis, and coordination issues.

Common Symptoms of GBS:

Weakness in limbs leading to difficulty in walking.
Paralysis that progresses upwards (ascending paralysis).
Difficulty moving facial muscles and loss of coordination.
Severe abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and diarrhea.

GBS Outbreak in Pune: Contaminated Water Supply Under Investigation

In response to the rising number of GBS cases in Pune, the Municipal Corporation has sealed 30 private water supply plants in the outskirts of the city. Authorities believe these areas may be the epicenter of the outbreak, suggesting a potential link between contaminated water sources and the surge in cases.

Treatment and Recovery for GBS Patients

GBS requires early medical intervention to manage symptoms effectively. The treatment approach includes:

  • Intravenous Immunoglobulin Therapy (IVIG) to regulate the immune system.
  • Plasma Exchange (Plasmapheresis) to remove harmful antibodies.
  • Respiratory Support for severe cases experiencing breathing difficulties.
  • Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation to help regain mobility.

Recovery from GBS varies based on severity. While some patients recover within a few weeks, others may take months or even years.

What’s Next?

Health authorities in Maharashtra are closely monitoring the outbreak, urging residents to maintain hygiene and be vigilant about early symptoms. With GBS cases on the rise, prompt diagnosis and timely medical intervention will be crucial in preventing fatalities and improving recovery outcomes.

Stay tuned for further updates as Maharashtra battles the GBS outbreak.
