Indian Mothers Unite Against Online Nicotine Promotion

A coalition of Indian mothers, known as "Mothers Against Vaping," has called for urgent government action to combat the rising online promotion of nicotine products targeting youth. This group has reached out to various ministries, including home affairs and health and family welfare, urging them to take a firm stand against the glamorization of vaping and e-cigarettes.

Indian Mothers Unite Against Online Nicotine Promotion

Despite existing laws that prohibit the promotion of tobacco products in all forms, manufacturers are reportedly continuing to advertise vapes and e-cigarettes on digital platforms. In their appeals, the Mothers Collective has requested the Indian government to mandate digital platforms to remove all content promoting nicotine products. They are also advocating for stringent measures against manufacturers and brands that profit from the online sale of these items.

The group has proposed the establishment of an interministerial task force to actively monitor and curb illegal online promotions of tobacco products. Under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act 2019, the production, manufacture, import, export, transport, sale, distribution, storage, and advertisement of electronic cigarettes are strictly banned in India. Additionally, the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act of 2003 prohibits both direct and indirect advertisements of tobacco products.

As the youth remain vulnerable to nicotine addiction through online platforms, the call for action by these mothers underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of existing laws and proactive measures to safeguard public health.

By taking these steps, India can work towards creating a healthier environment for its youth, free from the influence of harmful nicotine products.
