India Braces for Unusual Heatwaves in May: IMD Forecasts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns that this May, many regions across India will experience higher-than-normal temperatures, particularly in northwestern, central, and some eastern areas.

The forecast indicates that states such as Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Telangana, and Northern Karnataka are likely to face an increased number of heatwave days, with parts of Gujarat, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra also affected.
According to the IMD, northern India is expected to receive above-average rainfall, while several other regions, especially in the northwest, central, and northeast, may encounter drier conditions than usual. The IMD chief has projected that many areas could see between 2 to 7 heatwave days this month, which is 1 to 4 days more than the normal average.
Despite the anticipated heat, the IMD also notes that frequent thunderstorms and higher-than-normal rainfall in May are expected to mitigate the extreme temperature levels seen in the previous year. In April, a significant surge in heatwave activity was recorded, especially in western India, where Rajasthan and Gujarat experienced between 6 to 11 heatwave days—well above the usual average of 2 to 3.
As India prepares for these extreme weather patterns, residents are urged to take precautions against the heat and stay informed through reliable weather updates.
