India Braces for Heatwave: New Delhi and Northern States on High Alert
India's weather office warns of a significant heatwave, with temperatures in New Delhi expected to soar between 40 to 42°C on April 7th and 8th. This warning extends to several northern states, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a 2 to 4°C rise in maximum temperatures across many parts of central and northwest India. Eastern regions like Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha are expected to experience up to 11 heatwave days during this period.
Earlier predictions indicated above-normal temperatures across India from April to June, suggesting an increase in heatwave occurrences. Last year, the country faced an exceptionally severe summer, recording 536 heatwave days—the highest in 14 years. Typically, India experiences four to seven heatwave days over the summer months, but this year is likely to break that trend, prompting concerns for public health and safety.
