Bengaluru Police Halt Ed Sheeran’s Surprise Street Performance
British singer Ed Sheeran left his fans in Bengaluru heartbroken after his impromptu street performance at Church Street near Brigade Road was abruptly shut down by the police on Sunday. The singer, who had just wrapped up a concert the previous night, attempted to treat fans to a surprise gig, but authorities intervened, citing security and congestion concerns.
Reports indicate that Sheeran had begun singing his chart-topping hit "Shape of You" when a police officer stepped in and disconnected his microphone, effectively ending the performance. Fans who had gathered to witness the unexpected show were visibly disappointed.
Did Ed Sheeran Have Permission to Perform?
The singer later took to Instagram, stating that he did have official permission and that the performance was not just a random pop-up event. However, Bengaluru police maintained that they had denied approval due to an existing high court order, which mandates evacuations in crowded areas to prevent congestion.
A police official clarified:
“Church Street is one of the busiest areas in Bengaluru. We could not allow a performance due to the risk of overcrowding.”
Sheeran’s India Tour Continues
Despite the disruption, Ed Sheeran remains on his India tour and is scheduled to perform in Bengaluru on Sunday as part of his planned concert series. Prior to arriving in the city, the Perfect hitmaker had already performed in Hyderabad and Chennai, drawing massive crowds.
While the street performance may not have gone as planned, fans in Bengaluru still have the opportunity to see Sheeran live in concert. His show is expected to be one of the highlights of his India tour.
