Ecuador's Presidential Election: Key Contenders and Campaign Focus Ahead of February 9 Polls

As Ecuador gears up for its presidential election on February 9, 2025, campaigns have officially concluded, and a mandatory silence period has taken effect. Voters are poised to choose a new president and national legislators, almost 18 months after the last presidential elections. The two main contenders are current president Daniel Noboa, who is seeking reelection, and his closest challenger, Luisa Gonzalez, representing the Citizens' Revolution Party.

Key Issues and Campaign Strategies

During the election period, both candidates have largely centered their campaigns on critical issues such as security, energy, and employment. In recent weeks, Noboa and Gonzalez have been touring the country, working hard to rally voter support and secure the necessary votes to clinch the presidency.

Besides these two, 15 other candidates are also running in the election. However, the key focus remains on the showdown between Noboa and Gonzalez, which mirrors the 2023 election scenario. In the previous contest, Gonzalez led in the first round, but ultimately lost to Noboa in a runoff.

Election Process and Runoff Scenario

To win in the first round of voting, a candidate must either surpass 50% of the valid votes or secure at least 40%, with a margin of 10 percentage points ahead of the nearest rival. If no candidate meets these criteria, a runoff election will take place in April 2025, which would involve the two top contenders from the first round.

As Ecuador stands on the brink of this crucial election, the country’s future direction hinges on the decisions made by voters on February 9.
