Diplomatic Tensions Between India and Bangladesh Escalate Following Controversial Remarks
India and Bangladesh are experiencing a diplomatic rift following statements made by former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has summoned Dhaka’s acting High Commissioner over comments that India believes unfairly blame it for Bangladesh’s internal political issues.

New Delhi has expressed strong discontent with recent remarks made by Sheikh Hasina during a virtual address, which was broadcast from her exile in India. In the address, Hasina called for resistance against the interim government in Bangladesh, led by Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus. This statement led to violent protests in Bangladesh, including the vandalization of her father’s residence, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s home in Dhaka.
In response, India has summoned the acting High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Muhammad Nural Islam, to the Ministry of External Affairs. India conveyed that while it values positive and constructive ties with Bangladesh, it cannot accept baseless statements that continue to hold India responsible for Bangladesh’s internal issues. India also emphasized that the remarks made by Sheikh Hasina were in her individual capacity and should not be associated with the official position of the Indian government.
Bangladesh, on the other hand, has strongly condemned India’s role in hosting Hasina and criticized the Indian government for allowing her to make remarks that could destabilize Bangladesh's political environment. Dhaka has expressed concerns about India’s handling of the situation and has summoned India’s High Commission official to lodge a formal protest. Bangladesh has called Hasina's remarks "false" and accused her of intentionally trying to create hostility.
This ongoing diplomatic friction comes at a time when bilateral ties between the two nations are increasingly strained. While India has reiterated its commitment to strengthening relations with Bangladesh, it has also made it clear that it expects Dhaka to refrain from statements that might damage the atmosphere between the two countries.
Conclusion: A Test for Bilateral Relations
The diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh are a reminder of how sensitive internal political matters can spill over into international relations. While both countries have historically shared a close bond, the current friction underscores the challenges of managing political dissent within one country that reverberates into the neighboring state. The situation calls for careful diplomacy and mutual respect to avoid further deterioration in relations.
