Controversy Erupts Over Fashion Show in Kashmir During Ramadan
Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has launched an investigation following a fashion show in Gulmarg that has sparked significant backlash. The event, organized by a designer duo to celebrate the 15th anniversary of their label, has been criticized for its timing, occurring during the holy month of Ramadan.
The fashion show was met with widespread disapproval, particularly from local clerics and political leaders. Kashmir's Chief Cleric described the event as "outrageous and obscene," emphasizing that it showed a blatant disregard for local customs and sensitivities during a sacred time. Abdullah echoed these sentiments on social media, stating that the anger and shock among the community are entirely understandable.
In a public post on X, Abdullah assured that appropriate action would be taken against those responsible for organizing the show. He reiterated the need to respect the cultural values of the region, especially during Ramadan, a period of fasting and reflection for Muslims.
The designer duo, Shivan and Nesar, later issued an apology, expressing their regret for any offense caused. They clarified that their intent was to celebrate creativity and the ski lifestyle, not to disrespect religious sentiments. They acknowledged the concerns raised and committed to being more mindful of cultural sensitivities in the future.
The controversy highlights the ongoing tension in Jammu and Kashmir regarding cultural expression and religious observance. Political figures, including Sajad Lone, have also criticized the event, calling for accountability and reflection on such decisions.
As the investigation unfolds, the incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between modernity and tradition in the region.
