In January 2025, the Madhya Pradesh government announced a crucial decision to prohibit the sale of liquor in 19 religious cities and towns across the state. This initiative is part of a larger plan to progressively introduce a total liquor ban throughout Madhya Pradesh.

The prohibition will commence from April 1, 2025, leading to the closure of all liquor outlets in the designated areas. The announcement was made during a special state cabinet meeting held in Maheshwar, a city associated with Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, to celebrate her 300th birth anniversary.

The ban will affect one municipal corporation, six Nagar Palikas (municipalities), six Nagar Parishads (municipal councils), and six Gram Panchayats (village councils). Notable religious cities and towns impacted by the ban include Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, Mandleshwar, Chitrakoot, and Amarkantak.

With the closure of over 45 liquor vends in these 19 religious cities and towns, the state exchequer is projected to lose approximately Rs 450 crore in revenue. To compensate for this loss, the state government plans to raise the license fee for liquor outlets by 20% in the upcoming financial year.
