Argentina Declares Three Days of Mourning as Flash Floods Devastate Bahía Blanca
Argentina is in mourning after flash floods have claimed at least 16 lives, with many more still unaccounted for. The flooding, which occurred when a year's worth of rain fell within hours, has left entire neighborhoods in Bahía Blanca, a major port city south of Buenos Aires, submerged.

The torrential rains struck on Friday, prompting emergency evacuations from homes and health centers as authorities grappled with the rising waters. The city, home to 350,000 residents and located approximately 600 km southwest of the capital, has suffered significant infrastructural damage estimated at around $400 million. In response, the government has announced an emergency reconstruction aid package of $9.2 million to aid recovery efforts.
The flooding has also caused widespread power outages in the coastal areas, with city officials suspending electricity to prevent further incidents. Access to Bahía Blanca remains challenging, with officials stating that they will reach all affected areas as soon as weather conditions permit.
In the nearby resort town of Mar del Plata, local authorities have advised residents to stay indoors and have suspended evening activities due to the severe weather. While Buenos Aires experienced heavy rainfall, it fortunately sustained no major damage.
Bahía Blanca has a history of weather-related disasters; a storm in December 2023 resulted in 13 fatalities and extensive destruction. As the city faces this latest crisis, the resilience of its communities will be tested once again.
As the nation mourns the lives lost, the focus now shifts to recovery and rebuilding efforts in the wake of this devastating natural disaster.
