A man was detained by the Greater Chennai Police’s Central Crime Branch (CCB) for allegedly stealing Rs 5 crore from the account of a business he had previously worked for.

According to the police, C. Ramesh Chockalingam, manager of a corporate firm working in the accounting and IT industries, filed a complaint with the city police alleging that their organisation used SAP software for all of its operations.

J Augustin Cyril, the defendant, started working with the organisation in 2021 as a senior accounting specialist. Between July 2022 and February 2023, he reportedly exploited the user ID made through his SAP account to make bogus payment requests from Belgium and Spain and stole Rs 5 crore with the help of his buddy A Robin Christopher.

The police were informed by the complaint that the pair moved the stolen funds to the accounts of pals they had in Belgium and Spain.

According to the police, searches were carried out at the accused’s Ramanathapuram home and at the house of a relative on the court’s orders.

215 sovereigns of gold, Rs. 6 lakh in cash, as well as other goods including a car, bike, laptop, mobile phone, and other incriminating papers, were confiscated by the police during the search operation.

On July 11, the police detained Robin Christopher (age 26) in Paramakudi based on a tip-off, brought him before the court, and secured his remand. On Wednesday, they captured the primary suspect Augustin Cyril (29) from a hideaway in Anna Nagar in Chennai and took away Rs 1.6 lakh and a cell phone from him.
