After spending a week with a pair of scissors lodged in her skull, a 9-year-old schoolgirl from the Philippines is recovering in a hospital. Nicole Raga, the victim, was arguing with her 5-year-old brother about a pencil when the kid smacked her on the head with his backpack containing the scissors, according to the New York Post.

“Sharp objects like scissors or knives must be kept away from children,” said the girl’s father, Rene Boy Raga. The tragedy occurred at the family’s residence in the region of Sarangani.

The scissors became embedded in the 9-year-old’s skull. When the girl’s father noticed the instrument protruding from her skull, he transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was closely monitored.

Unfortunately, her family could not afford the 30,000 PHP ($540) surgery, so the unfortunate kid had to stay in the hospital for a week with the scissors still trapped in her skull.

The procedure was performed on the girl on July 9 after the family received donations from concerned neighbours. She is still being treated in a hospital in General Santos City.

“I’m grateful for everyone who extended their help,” the girl’s father stated in a statement to local media. We are just impoverished, therefore I had no idea where to get the money for the procedure. I am so grateful to everyone who donated money and prayed for Nicole.
